Police in Lusaka Wednesday morning besieged former President Edgar Lungu’s house in Ibex Hill area to search for alleged stolen motor vehicle.
The move has been described as a breach of the constitution by the former ruling Patriotic Front Party (PF), and his Lawyer Makebi Zulu.
Addressing Journalists in Lusaka on Wednesday at Mr. Lungu’s resident in Ibex Hill Area, Zulu said the Police surrounded the house in the early hours of Wednesday to conduct a search against the former first Lady Esther Lungu in connection with a vehicle after a complaint from an unknown person.
Zulu said the move by the Police is compromising the former Head of State’s immunity because the Police will be purporting to be searching his wife but will have access to his property.
“So, as things stand, whatever the issue of the search, they can simply say so and we will make the same available to them that if its on the property,” he said.
Zulu said it is abundantly clear that there is an attempt to circumvent Mr. Lungu’s privileges as a former President because prior to this incident he received information that Police will be coming to conduct the search at the house.
He said Police thought it would be ingenious to come to Mr. Lungu’s house because they indicated that the property is not in his name.
“We are talking to the police who had the guts to say the property is not in his name, so in that particular case why can’t they issue a search warrant in the name of the owner of the property, why have they issued it in the name of the person who is not the owner of the property,” Makebi said.

He alleged that they have been told to go to Parliament and seek to remove Mr. Lungu’s immunity before they can have access to his property in Ibex but as things stand access has been denied to them.
“If at all they want the former first lady whatever the issue of investigations it is, she has never refused to appear before any investigative wing and we will make her available because they can’t come to a conclusion before they can hear her side of the story,” Makebi said.
He said the Police are suggesting that the former first lady could have stolen an Allex Toyota motor vehicle but this is meant to embarrass the former first family.
