Ruling UPND takes swipe at critics of government’s alleged inaction on Konkola, Mopani mines

United Party for National Development (UPND) has warned the opposition to stop capitalising on unresolved issues in the mining sector.

UPND Copperbelt Deputy Spokesperson, Godfrey Kamangu, said in an interview on Friday in Kitwe that making political capital on the government’s delay to announce the way forward on Konkola Copper Mine and Mopani Copper Mine will not work.

“The people know that the government of President Hakainde Hichilema means well, soon the position is going to be known and the opposition will have nothing to blame UPND government for,” Kamangu said.

He said the Patriotic Front (PF) should be the last party to blame or rather comment on issues facing the two mines because they ‘messed up’ the mines by going into senseless liquidation.

The government has come under fire for failing to announce the way forward on Mopani and KCM with the latest being the Copperbelt Civil Society Mining Consultative Forum (CCSMCF) and Chingola Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The forum said it was disappointed by President Hakainde Hichilema’s inertia in resolving KCM and Mopani.

The forum described the statement attributed to Mines and Minerals Development Minister, Paul Kabuswe, saying the Democracy Summit delayed decision making as disappointing.

Chamber president, Freddie Musonda, said KCM and Mopani were cash-cows not only to the people of the Copperbelt but the country as whole.
