Six people have been arrested in Kalulushi in the Copperbelt region by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) for being in possession of 931.47 kilogrammes of assorted bush meat.
Of the six, five arrested are females and a male.
The six were arrested when they were on transit from Ngabwe District in Central Province through Mpongwe to Luanshya on the Copperbelt.
Ministry of Tourism Public Relations Officer, Sakabilo Kalembwe, said in a statement on Saturday that the DNPW have identified the suspects as John Banda Mwale, 54 of Mushili in Ndola, Gloria Kalunga, 42 of Mamalosa in Luanshya, Juliet Kasongo, 33 of Malaika Township in Luanshya and Sara Mwamba 37 of Mwanshani in Luanshya.
Others were Annieble Lungu, 52 of Bwananyina School in Luanshya and Joyce Kunda, 48 of Mikofwa in Luanshya.
Kalembwe said during the search, 19 big bundles of bush meat were identified and weighing up to 931.47kg comprised Sable Antelope dried meat 197.58kg, 110.89kg of Warthog, 375.55kg of Reedbuck, 79.17kg Impala, 11.69 kgof Porcupine, 108.01kg Baboon and 48.58kg of Common Duiker.
He said the suspects appeared at the Kalulushi Magistrate Court on Friday and denied the charges and matter would come up for trial on April 18, 2023.
