United Party for National Development (UPND) on the Copperbelt has distanced itself from threats to ‘decisively’ deal with Patriotic Front (PF) by its youth ranks.
In a video clip that has gone viral, provincial youth official Kangwa Kamando is heard threatening the PF members that they will start beating them up in retaliation of what they went through at the hands of the former ruling party.
“UPND will never advocate violence of any sort because we were victims of violence during our time in opposition and we understand how repulsive it is to peace loving Zambians,” Copperbelt UPND information and publicity secretary Timothy Mfula said.
Mfula said the UPND stands for peace and has promised the people of Zambia coexistence of all political parties.
“We promised Zambians that will shall restore all the freedoms that were taken away by the previous regime.
“His Excellency, President Hakainde Hichilema, is a strong believer in peace and cannot tolerate violence of any sort and those who are advocating for such are on their own when the long arm of the law catches up with them,” Mfula said.

He said in a statement on Thursday in Kitwe that the ruling party’s position was that everybody was free to wear whatever regalia they want but they should not abuse their freedom to inflame the situation on the pretext of exercising their freedoms.
“It should be made known to all that every freedom has boundaries which should be respected,” Mfula said.
“Those who brutalized Zambians in the past in the name of ‘ichipani’ should come to terms that Zambians have chosen to embrace peace and unity as the greatest ingredients for development,” he said.
Mfula maintained that the video circulating on social media from the youth does not represent the position of the party in that the President was a strong believer in coexistence and respect for the rule of law.
He said the party’s position was not out of weakness but strength in the quest to build One Zambia One Nation and foster development.
