Zambia has been recognised among the top five countries in the world that have made great progress to improve connectivity over the last 18 months.
Furthermore, Zambia has been identified as the most improved country in Sub-Saharan Africa with regard to mobile connectivity score.
This is according to Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati on Monday on his official social media handle.
Mutati said this recognition was made at the Global System for World Annual Congress 2023, which has a membership of over 750 Mobil network operators and more than 400 associate members in the mobile industry ecosystem.
“As a country, we were shortlisted among the top five countries in the world, alongside India, Jordan, Tunisia and Uzbekistan in which the overall award was won by India,” he said.
Mutati pointed out that Zambia implemented the technical regulation an Information Communication Technology (ICT) policy, digital transformation strategy and broadband plan.
He said this includes the development of a roadmap for 5G spectrum.
Other notable achievements that were recognised are economic regulation, universal access service and cyber security
“Notably, Zambia has also been ranked sixth for peak On-Net calling tariffs when benchmarked against similar tariffs in eighteen countries within SADC and COMESA regions.
“Further, Zambia has been ranked fourth in pricing of monthly data bundles of 1.5 GB relative to fourteen other countries, indicating the country’s relative competitiveness with respect to affordability,” Mutati said.
He said the pro-growth policies adopted for the ICT sector in Zambia have already started to yield positive outcomes with anticipated improvements in internet coverage and adoption.
