A man in his late 20s has died in a mine accident in Kitwe after a train wagon full of copper ore fell and squeezed him against the wall.
Copperbelt Police Chief Peacewell Mweemba said in a statement on Tuesday that the incident happened on Monday at around 11:20 hours at South Ore Body (SOB) Nkana mine plant in Wusakile township.
Mweemba said one of the directors of the Company, Harold Maluku, aged 51 reported that John Mwela, a general worker for BEEM Mine Suppliers died in a mine accident at level 3,360 meters.

This was where he was scheduled to load ground crushed copper ore and load it into a train wagon carrier.
On the material day, Mwela reported on duty at 08:00 hours and was assigned to work from ground level 3,360 metres when a train wagon he was loading, laden with the crushed copper ore, disengaged and fell on him and squeezed him against the wall.
Mwela sustained a depressed left side of the rib cage, bruises and swelling on the right pelvic region.
The body was retrieved by mine authorities and rushed to Kitwe General Hospital by the police for certification of death and deposition into the mortuary.
He said the scene of crime had not yet been visited for safety reasons but that arrangements were being made for a scene visit with a coroner.
