The Australian Government has congratulated Zambia for abolishing the death penalty, becoming the twenty-fifth African state to do so.
Australia was pleased to commend Zambia on this progress at the recent Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review on January 30, 2023.
The Universal Periodic Review is a mechanism of the United Nations Human Rights Council that emerged from the 2005 UN reform process.
Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Senator Hon Penny Wong said it was an historic achievement adding that Australia opposes the death penalty in all circumstances for all people.

This is contained in a congratulatory letter from the Australian government to the Zambian presented to the Zambian High Commissioner to Australia Elias Munshya in Canberra on Wednesday.
Wong said Australia looks forward to further cooperation with Zambia towards the global abolition of the death penalty.
And Munshya said the Zambian government was committed to promoting democracy, human rights, good governance, and basic freedoms.
President Hakainde Hichilema on December 23 , 2022 signed legislation abolishing death penalty.
Zambia also removed the offense of criminal defamation of the President from the Zambia’s Penal Code in further demonstration of President Hichilema’s commitment to human rights and the rule of law.
This according to a statement made available to the Zambian Monitor by Zambian high commission to Australia first Secretary-Press Charles Mucholo on Wednesday.
