Why Zambia’s industrial sector is not growing —Citizens First leader, Kalaba

Harry Kalaba, Citizens First president has said his preoccupation will be to revive Zambia’s industries.

Kalaba said in statement on Monday that Zambia in the early 90’s had 20 percent manufacturing contribution to the country’s Gross Domestic Product(GDP) .

To become an industrialised country, he said the manufacturing industry must contribute 25 percent of GDP.

“At the change of government in 1991, Zambia’s manufacturing sector was contributing 20 percent of the GDP, only five percent away from being declared an ‘industrialised’ nation.

Kalaba said then the sector collapsed because of privatisation.

He said the Citizens First priority would be to revive the sector and steer Zambia back towards industrialisation for value addition to create employment, reduce poverty and grow the economy.
