President Hakainde Hichilema has announced that he is ready to be a guinea pig following his commitment to abolish the defamation of the president law.
Hichilema has emphasised the Zambian government’s commitment to abolish the defamation of the president law as he did not mind what people would say about him.
“We are committed to legal reforms and remove the defamation of character law. This is a very unpopular decision among leaders but let me be a guinea pig because I do not mind what people say about me,” Hichilema said today Monday at the end of year press conference.
At the same conference, Hichilema stressed that no journalist should be arrested during the line of duty.
He said it was up to the media to deliver factual and truthful information to the public without breaking any law.

The President cautioned the media to uphold the rule of law and avoid alarming the nation, thereby causing panic and chaos.
“No journalist should be arrested in the line of duty. It is up to the media to deliver factual information, if you break the law that is another issue. That is my commitment to you the media for 2023.
“Be truthful and do not alarm the nation by information such as the country will be ungovernable just because you are no longer in power. Why should a country be ungovernable? Do not alarm the nation,” Hichilema said.
Hichilema also said any law breaker must be arrested despite of their political affiliation.
He warned that there should be no party symbols when it came to upholding the rule of law.
“No one should agitate violence, if you chose to agitate violence then the law will visit you. Simple,” he said.
