$56.7 million agreement signed to develop Mokambo road, border facility

The Zambian government has signed a $56.7 million concession agreement with Jasworld Ports Limited to upgrade the Mufulira-Mokambo Road and modernise the Mokambo border facility.

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development, the project included the upgrading the 15.5-kilometer road to bituminous standards to be undertaken at a cost of $18.6 million.

Other components are the preparatory works at $1.9 million, border facility upgrades at $14.7 million and construction of toll plaza at $1.5 million

The project, expected to be completed within two years, comes with a 22-year concession period.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Finance and National Planning Minister, Situmbeko Musokotwane, stated the importance of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) in driving infrastructure development.

“The road had remained in a deplorable state for more than 40 years, but it has taken the ingenuity of the New Dawn Government to resolve the issue,” he said, calling the signing a historic moment for Zambia.

Jasworld Ports Limited chairman, Soon Chinyuny, outlined the scope of the project, which included upgrading the road, expanding and modernising the Mokambo border post, and constructing an office park.

“We will ensure the project is expeditiously executed and that locals are engaged during the project cycle,” Chinyuny said.

The ceremony was attended by Commerce, Trade, and Industry Minister, Chipoka Mulenga, Kantanshi member of parliament, Anthony Mumba, and his Kankoyo and Mufulira counterparts Heartson Mabeta and Golden Mwila, among others.

Separately, in Ndola, Minister Musokotwane signed a $110 million concession agreement with ZMart Group of Companies to construct a One-Stop Border Post at Kasumbalesa.

The project would also include the construction of 20 kilometers of township roads in Chililabombwe and Chingola on the Copperbelt.
