The Zambian government has announced that Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) will broadcast live the Constitutional Court proceedings, starting with the much-anticipated judgment on former President Edgar Lungu’s eligibility case on December 10, 2024.
Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary, Thabo Kawana, revealed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday, describing it as part of the government’s commitment to transparency and public access to judicial processes.
Kawana stated that the initiative stems from a resolution passed at the 10th Policy Committee Meeting held in April, which prioritised live broadcasts of cases deemed to be of significant public interest.
“The Chief Justice, Dr. Mumba Malila, has demonstrated his commitment to the principles of Open Justice by granting ZNBC exclusive rights to live broadcast the court’s judgment,” Kawana stated.
He added that rules governing live court broadcasts are under review.
While other media outlets would have access to the courtroom, ZNBC would remain the sole broadcaster allowed to transmit live footage.
“This move reinforces our commitment to transparency and ensures justice is not only done but seen to be done,” Kawana said.
The Media Liaison Committee (MLC) commended the judiciary’s decision, describing it as a milestone in promoting democracy and transparency in Zambia.
MLC Chairperson, Enerst Chanda, praised Chief Justice Malila’s leadership, stating, “This is an icebreaker and a significant step in enriching the country’s democracy.”
The MLC also called for expanded access, urging that other television and radio stations, as well as photojournalists, be allowed to broadcast or capture proceedings in the future.
“This decision will help protect judicial officers from unwarranted criticism, as Zambians will now be able to witness the dispensation of justice and make informed comments,” Chanda said.
Chanda further urged media houses to invest in training court reporters to ensure professional and accurate coverage of judicial proceedings.
