Twenty-eight individuals from Mkushi and Serenje districts in Central Province have been arrested for operating unregistered pharmacies and agro-veterinary shops, violating section 14 (1) of the Medicines and Allied Substances Act No. 3 of 2013.

The arrests were made during an operation conducted by the Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) in collaboration with the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in Kapiri Mposhi and Serenje between September 13 and 28, 2024.

ZAMRA Senior Public Relations Officer, Ludovic Mwape, said in a statement on Monday that the operation targeted illegal trade in medicines and allied substances across the Zambian market.

“The outlets were mapped during a sensitisation programme conducted prior to the operation,” Mwape explained.

The suspects have been released on police bond and are expected to appear in court soon.

“We reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that only registered pharmaceutical outlets are operational,” Mwape said, stating the importance of protecting the public by providing safe, high-quality and effective medicinal products.

He also warned that pharmaceutical outlets failing to adhere to standards would face prosecution.
