220 Lumumba bus drivers empowered with land in Central Province

The Lumumba Bus Station Chazanga route has allocated land to 220 bus drivers in the Muchenje area of Chief Mungule, Central Province, as part of efforts to secure their future.

Route Chairperson, Pethias Nenguke, revealed that each driver would receive a 30×30 plot from a 12-hectare parcel of land purchased for K450,000.

In an interview with Zambia Monitor in Central Province on Monday, Nenguke attributed the success to government’s efforts in eliminating political cadarism, which had allowed the drivers to operate freely without fear of intimidation.

“Each driver contributes K40 for each trip made, and this is how we managed to raise this amount of money within 12 months,” Nenguke explained.

The chairperson planned to establish a well-organized layout with a 12-meter-wide two-way road dividing the area.

“This development not only secures the drivers’ future but also enhances service delivery for our clients,” Nenguke said.

Vice Chairperson, Evans Chibota, urged beneficiaries to refrain from selling the land, emphasizing that it was allocated to benefit the drivers.

“Our drivers do not have pensions, so these initiatives are crucial in protecting them from financial insecurity after retirement,” Chibota said.

The beneficiaries acknowledged the challenge of raising the necessary funds but credited the peaceful environment fostered by the government for making the initiative achievable.
