2022 results better than 2021, as 86,732 of 125,245 obtain grade 12 certificates —Minister

Over 86,000 candidates who sat for grade 12 examinations in 2022 have obtained school certificates.

This is of the 125,145 candidates who sat the examination last year.

Announcing the results on Friday in Lusaka, Education Minister Douglas Syakalima said a total of 125,145 candidates, representing 98.32 percent of those who entered, sat for the examination.

Syakalima however said only 86,732 (69.31%) of the candidates obtained school certificate.

“Of the 125,145 who sat for the examination, 63,283 (50.57 %) were boys while 61,862 (49.43 %) were girls.

“Of the 125,145 candidates who sat the examination, 86,732 (69.31%) obtained school certificate, representing an increase of 2.16 percentage points from 67.15 percent in 2021,” he said.

Syakalima also said a total of 35,554(28.41%) candidates obtained statements of results, while 2,859 (2.28%) candidates failed the examination.

He pointed out that analysis of performance by subject revealed that the highest mean percentage was recorded in food and nutrition (70.0%), followed by design and technology (66.42%) and french (66.36%).

Lower mean percentages, he said, were recorded in mathematics (27.51%), science (29.81%) and history (34.24%).

Syakalima however said overall, candidate performance was better in 2022 when compared to 2021, especially in practical subjects, as the mean scored for all the practical subjects were above 50 percent.

On the examination malpractices, Syakalima said there were no reported leakages of examination question papers during the conduct of the 2022 school certificate examination.

He however mentioned that there were 97 individual and 15 whole centre cases of suspected examination malpractice.

“The results for the affected candidates have been withheld and the cases will be considered by the relevant committee of council at the next scheduled meeting,” Syakalima said.

He encouraged candidates who did not perform well to register for the 2023 General Certificate of Examination (GCE) examination.

Candidate registration for the 2023 examinations started on November, 01 2022 and will close on 3rd march, 2023.

Meanwhile, Syakalima said a total of 10 assessments experts from examining and quality assurance bodies in seven African countries participated in the standard setting and awards meeting for the examination

He explained that was meant to ensure that the results were of comparable international standards.

Participants came from Botswana, Lesotho, Mauritius, Tanzania, Namibia, South Africa and Malawi.
