The Lusaka High Court has awarded a total of K10.2 million in compensation to 17 UPND members who sued the Attorney-General for false imprisonment.
The State would also cover their legal costs amounting to K800,000.
The consent judgment, signed by Judge Ruth Chibbabbuka on August 7, 2024, ordered the State to pay K600,000 to each of the plaintiffs.
The plaintiffs, led by Manyando Manyando, initially sought K12.75 million in compensation for false imprisonment and malicious prosecution following their arrest during an unauthorised procession in 2015.
They had gathered to show solidarity with expelled PF MP Sylvia Masebo at the Lusaka Magistrate Court on December 15, 2015.
The plaintiffs claimed they were detained for two weeks and suffered police brutality before being acquitted.
They also sought K550,000 for legal fees, K490,161 for loss of business, and general damages for physical assault by police officers.
Represented by Martha Mushipe and Associates, the plaintiffs agreed to discontinue the case after being awarded K600,000 each.
Last month, the Attorney-General entered a consent agreement with Mushipe, a lawyer and UPND member, for an award of K2.1 million for false imprisonment and prosecution.
