A 15-year-old girl, who aspires to emulate Zambia’s star footballer Barbra Banda, bravely testified in the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court about the repeated sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of her stepfather, Muyunda Kakwaya.
The juvenile, who plays soccer, recounted the traumatic events that occurred in August 2024, when her stepfather would allegedly assault her while she prepared for school.
Her mother and stepfather would leave for work around 06:00 hours, leaving her with her younger siblings.
The victim narrated three instances of abuse, each occurring around 09:00 hours, when her stepfather would return home unexpectedly.
He would allegedly pull her into the bedroom, assault her, and then give her K20, warning her not to tell her mother.
The third incident proved to be the final straw, prompting the victim to confide in her mother by writing a note, which she placed in her mother’s handbag.
The note read: “Dear mum, I hope you will believe me and give me the justice that I want.”

When her mother’s younger sister discovered the note, she accompanied the victim to the police station, where a report was filed.
The victim underwent a medical examination at Chipata Clinic, which confirmed the abuse.
During cross-examination, the victim denied allegations that she had slept out on multiple occasions, which her stepfather claimed was the reason for his threats to chase her away.
The matter has been adjourned to February 4, 2024, pending further proceedings.
