12 arrested as Daka, 20, reportedly killed by fellow inmates at Matero police station

A 20-year-old male suspect, Joseph Daka of George Compound, has been allegedly murdered by fellow inmates while in detention at Matero Police Station.

According to Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, Daka was being held on a charge of aggravated robbery when the incident occurred between 11:00 PM on September 22, 2024, and 8:00 AM on September 23, 2024.

The Custody Officer discovered Daka’s body during a routine check in Cell Number Three.

“At approximately 8:00 AM on September 23, 2024, a report of murder involving Joseph Daka was recorded,” Hamoonga stated, noting that the deceased had a swollen chin and bruises on both hands, indicating assault.

Daka was initially apprehended on September 19, 2024, at around 7:30 PM.

Preliminary investigations revealed that he had been tied up and beaten by his fellow inmates, leading to his death.

“Twelve suspects have been identified, and investigations are ongoing to determine who will be charged with murder,” Hamoonga added.

The body had been transported to the University Teaching Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Hamoonga assured the public that thorough investigations were underway and that the matter would be handled with the utmost seriousness to ensure justice was served.
